Life Before Support
Mariyamma’s household depended on irregular daily wages that were insufficient to meet basic needs. Due to stigma associated with leprosy, access to employment and community support remained limited. Financial instability often pushed the family toward debt, while social exclusion deepened feelings of helplessness and isolation.
As a woman responsible for managing her household, Mariyamma carried the dual burden of sustaining her family while having little control over income or resources. The lack of opportunity gradually eroded her confidence and sense of self-worth.
BFDT’s Intervention
Brighter Future Development Trust identified Mariyamma through its community outreach and women empowerment initiatives. Recognizing her determination and potential, BFDT facilitated her inclusion in a Self-Help Group (SHG) and supported her with livelihood assistance to start a small income-generating activity suitable to her circumstances.
Along with financial support, BFDT provided mentoring, encouragement, and regular follow-up to ensure she could manage her livelihood confidently and sustainably.

With a stable source of income, Mariyamma’s life began to change. She could contribute consistently to household expenses, reduce reliance on debt, and plan for her family’s needs. Beyond financial improvement, the livelihood restored her confidence and sense of identity.
