For Elisetty Suryarao, life changed the moment illness began to define how society saw him. Affected by leprosy, he not only endured physical challenges but also faced deep social exclusion that stripped him of opportunities, income, and self-respect. What followed was a long period of isolation—one where survival became harder each day.

Profile Snapshot
Name: Elisetty Suryarao
Age: 45 years
Location: Srikakulam District, Andhra Pradesh
Health Condition: Leprosy (cured, with physical deformities)
Support Provided: Livelihood assistance, community inclusion support
Life Before Support
Suryarao’s visible deformities made it extremely difficult for him to find work. Employers hesitated, neighbors kept their distance, and daily wage opportunities slowly disappeared. Without a stable source of income, he struggled to meet basic needs and became dependent on irregular support. The emotional burden of rejection and the fear of being permanently excluded weighed heavily on him.
Like many persons affected by leprosy, Suryarao experienced not only poverty but a loss of identity and purpose.
BFDT’s Intervention
When Brighter Future Development Trust reached his community through its disability and leprosy outreach programs, the team took time to understand Suryarao’s abilities rather than his limitations. After assessment and counseling, BFDT supported him with livelihood assistance to start a small self-employment activity, along with guidance and follow-up.
In addition to economic support, BFDT worked with the community to address stigma, encouraging inclusion and awareness so that Suryarao could rebuild his life with confidence.
A Turning Point
With a steady source of income, Suryarao gradually regained control over his life. He began earning independently, managing his daily expenses, and contributing to his household. The financial stability restored more than just income—it rebuilt his confidence and standing within the community.
“People now see me for what I do, not for my illness.”
— Suryarao
Restoring Dignity Through Opportunity
Suryarao’s journey reflects the heart of Brighter Future’s work—ensuring that people affected by disease are not defined by stigma, but empowered through opportunity. By addressing both livelihood needs and social inclusion, BFDT enables individuals like Suryarao to reclaim dignity and independence.
